Breaking ground in Delfzijl

Excavators at work on the Delfzijl plot

DBG Bio Energy has commenced the construction of the first plant in Groningen Seaports, as a first out of five in the coming five years.

After the ecologist ensured that construction works would not interfere with the breeding season and thus that no birds were breeding on our plot, we were able to go ahead with the site preparations. As a first step, the top layer of the 9 hectares large landscape has been scraped off. Additionally, excavators made sure to remove excess water from the site, by digging ditches.

At this moment, we are planting settlement gauges on the plot in order to start measuring the density of the soil after it has been loaded by around 40.000m3 – equivalent to around 2000 truckloads. The settlement of the soil will take around 3 months.

From our DBG office in Appingedam, we are continuing constructive meetings with Groningen Seaports, the province of Groningen (such as Omgevingsdienst), Municipality Eemsdelta, the utilities companies, our future neighbors as well as other important (local) stakeholders.  The aim remains to take in the first batches of paper sludge and start full operations in 2023.
